Base Oil Supply & Sourcing: SN150, SN500 & Bright Stock

Base oil names alone are not specifications. A useful inquiry identifies the viscosity grade and provides target ranges for viscosity, viscosity index, flash point, pour point, colour and sulphur, together with the intended lubricant application and acceptable origin.

Specification checklist for the RFQ

  • SN150, SN350, SN500 or bright stock
  • Kinematic viscosity at 40°C and 100°C
  • Viscosity index, flash point and pour point
  • Colour, sulphur and Noack volatility where required

Applications and end-use context

  • Automotive and industrial lubricants
  • Hydraulic and gear oils
  • Grease and process-oil blending
  • High-viscosity formulations using bright stock

Delivery structure and logistics

Bulk tanker, flexitank, IBC and drum options have different contamination, heating, handling and delivered-cost implications. The RFQ should state required packing, minimum parcel, loading temperature, destination restrictions and whether third-party inspection is expected.

Prices shown on the site are public market references only. An executable indication depends on specification, origin, destination, Incoterm, freight, insurance and payment structure.

Documents and commercial inputs

  • Typical data sheet and recent COA
  • Origin and refinery or blender identity
  • Packing and net-weight details
  • Inspection, loading and delivery requirements

How the inquiry is reviewed

01

Define product, grade, quantity, destination and timing.

02

Review specification, documents, logistics assumptions and compliance points.

03

Where appropriate, summarise possible sourcing or freight routes for the next commercial discussion.

Frequently asked questions

Is every SN500 interchangeable?

No. Products sold under the same grade name can differ in viscosity, VI, colour, sulphur and performance. The accepted specification must be attached to the RFQ.

Which packing is best for base oil?

It depends on parcel size, destination equipment and contamination control. Bulk is efficient for large volume; flexitank, IBC and drums may suit smaller or inland deliveries.
